Upwork Automation Market: Platform & Application Comparison

September 2026 Analysis

Report Date: October 2026 Data Period: October 2025 - September 2026 (12 months) Total Jobs Analyzed: 1,901 (September 2026 platform set, unique jobs after 10 duplicates removed)

Executive Summary

September 2026 continued a soft late summer: lower volume, a median at the bottom of its range, and three multi-month share moves. The month captured cleanly, with every daily run completing, at 1,901 platform-set postings. That is softer than August's stored 2,391, but the raw totals overstate the gap. August's total carries the 2026-08-31 backfill re-tag (about 6% of the month), and September has 30 days to August's 31. Part of the softening is real, because the independently captured broad automation set also softened. Two softer months after July is a hint, not a trend. For context, the 2025 series also eased through late summer (-6.1% August to September 2025).

The headline stories: the median hourly rate slipped to $30 from $32.50, its second straight monthly decline, matching December 2025's $30. The mean edged up to $37.94 from $36.91, inside the window's $36.91–$43.27 band. Make.com's share of platform mentions fell for a fourth straight month to 13.93%, the lowest in the 12-month window. n8n's share of platform mentions rose for a fourth straight month to 42.52%. Zapier was flat at 43.55%. Fixed-price share slipped to 35.2%, a fourth straight monthly decline.

The AI share of platform postings edged up to 41.24% from 40.82%, even though the count fell to 784 postings from 976. That is mostly the smaller denominator. GoHighLevel remains the largest application at 401 mentions, though its share slipped to 21.09% from 25.09%. HubSpot's share edged up to 12.36% from 10.00% while its count slipped to 235 from 239. Premium work ($75+/hr) fell to 68 postings from 78, while its share edged up to 3.58% from 3.26%. That is fewer premium jobs on a smaller base, not a premium expansion.

Key September Insight: The durable picture is calm. The median sat in the $30–35 range in 11 of the last 12 months, and two straight declines have now put it at $30. Two moves are not a trend, and this is not a floor call. The signals with real length are share moves, each of them four months long: Make.com's slide, n8n's rise in mention mix, and the fall in fixed-price share. Four moves is more than noise but short of the six months that make a trend.

These are mention counts. Counts move with total volume and cross two measurement changes: the May-2026 coverage change and the 2026-06-24 hybrid cutover. August's counts also carry the backfill re-tag. The since-July column compares two cleanly captured months on the same basis (31 days vs 30). Direction is judged on share, not on these counts.

Status Indicators:

  • 🚀 Strong Growth (>10%)
  • 🟢 Stable/Growth (0-10%)
  • 🟡 Slight Decline (0-5%)
  • 📉 Declining (>5%)
  • 💥 Collapse (sustained >20% decline since the June 2025 baseline only). It is not used this month because counts cannot be compared to June 2025 across the measurement changes.

Platform Analysis

Zapier (Volume Leader)

  • Current: 891 jobs
  • Share of platform mentions: 43.55%, flat vs 43.66%
  • Share of postings: 46.87%, up from 44.75%, while the count fell to 891 from 1,070. That is the smaller denominator, not new demand.
  • Assessment: Zapier is the volume leader. That is standing structure, not this month's news.
  • Recommendation: Primary platform for volume and client breadth.

n8n (Technical-Depth Option)

  • Current: 870 jobs
  • Share of platform mentions: 42.52%, up from 39.17%, the fourth straight monthly rise (32.67% in May 2026 → 34.24% → 36.27% → 39.17% → 42.52%). That is the highest in the 12-month window.
  • Share of postings: 45.77%, up from 40.15%, while the count fell to 870 from 960.
  • Assessment: Four consecutive moves in mention mix is more than a single-month wobble, but it is still short of six months. It is a hint about mix, not a race result.
  • Recommendation: Pair it with Zapier. The technical-depth positioning stands on its own merits regardless of this month's share.

Make.com (Weakest of the Three)

  • Current: 285 jobs
  • Share of platform mentions: 13.93%, down from 17.18%, the fourth straight monthly decline (25.89% in May 2026 → 24.92% → 21.69% → 17.18% → 13.93%). That is the lowest in the 12-month window.
  • Share of postings: 14.99%, down from 17.61%, also a fourth straight decline.
  • Assessment: Make.com has been the weakest of the three for the whole series. The four-month slide in share is the clearest platform-level move in the window. It is not yet six months, but it is no longer a one-print story.
  • Recommendation: Treat it as a secondary skill only. If Make.com is your only platform, add a second.

Power Automate (Small, Flat)

  • Current: 28 jobs
  • Share of postings: 1.47%, flat vs 1.21%
  • Assessment: It is too small for a standalone specialization.
  • Recommendation: Pursue it only within the Microsoft enterprise ecosystem.

These are mention counts. Counts move with total volume and are not comparable across the May-2026 and 2026-06-24 measurement changes. August also carries the backfill re-tag. Direction is judged on share, shown in the Status column.

Reading the table: Three applications had a falling count but a rising share: Google Sheets, Slack and HubSpot. Their shares rose mostly because the denominator shrank, not because demand for them grew. Excel is small and steady: 68 in July, 67 in August, 72 in September. Its May to July counts are corrected here for an old matching bug that also counted "excellent" as Excel. The counts before May 2026 come from the original matcher and run high, so read Excel's trend from May on. Small-count applications (Trello at 17, Xero at 22, Asana at 39) swing by double digits on a handful of postings. Those swings are noise.

Zoho827258-19.4%3.01% → 3.05% (flat)Small base, flat

Key Insight: GoHighLevel has been the largest application for 10 straight months, and HubSpot's share has ranged 10.00–13.54% since May 2026, rising to 12.36% this month from 10.00%. GoHighLevel's share slipped to 21.09% from 25.09%. That is one month and should be read as such. Its share has moved between 21.09% and 27.51% since May 2026. Salesforce and Zoho sit on bases of 70 and 58 mentions, where a few postings decide the direction. The monthly CRM "rotation" between them is small-number noise. The advice is unchanged: pick a CRM and go deep.

Generic "CRM" Mentions

MonthMentionsNote
Jul 20261,084First full month on the hybrid basis
Aug 20261,037Carries the backfill re-tag
Sep 2026797Clean capture, 30 days

Generic CRM mentions came in at 797. These are counts, and they move with total volume. There is no share row for generic CRM in this month's fact sheet, so this report does not call a direction.

Alternative CRM Solutions

ApplicationSep 2026 (count)Share of Postings (Aug → Sep)Assessment
Airtable1538.70% → 8.05% (down, 4th straight decline)Longest decline among alternatives

ClickUp693.68% → 3.63% (flat)Flat this month
Monday.com542.17% → 2.84% (up)Share edged up on a small base

Insight: Airtable's share has fallen four months running, from 17.80% in May 2026 to 8.05%. It is the most sustained move among the alternatives. Notion's share slipped to 4.94%, ClickUp's was flat at 3.63%, and Monday.com's edged up to 2.84%. Alternative tools as the primary CRM remain a weaker positioning than a dedicated CRM. Airtable's slide is four moves long, not six.

AI Tier

Two populations, labeled separately. The platform set (1,901 jobs naming Zapier, n8n or Make.com) shows AI adoption within platform automation work. The broad automation set (3,254 jobs) is a wider net used only for the AI picture. It is not the market size.

AI adoption within platform automation work

784 of 1,901 platform postings named at least one AI term: 41.24%, edged up from 40.82% (976 postings in August). The count fell while the share edged up, so this is a one-month move on a smaller denominator, not a surge.

AI CategoryAug 2026 (platform, count)Sep 2026 (platform, count)Direction (share row)Sep 2026 (broad set, count)

LangChain6349Flat54
AI Builders3635Edged up (count fell)37
Embeddings2531Up (count also rose)34

Per-term figures are overlapping mention counts. One job naming OpenAI, RAG and agents counts three times, so these figures are never summed and are not shares of the market. August's platform counts carry the backfill re-tag.

Reading the AI tier:

  • OpenAI/GPT appeared in 432 platform jobs and Claude/Anthropic in 397. These overlap, so they are mention counts, not shares of the market.
  • Claude/Anthropic's share has declined four months running and Voice AI's three. Both are multi-month moves on the share row, not single prints.
  • Embeddings is the one term where count and share both rose (25 → 31). It is a small base.
  • In the broad automation set, Claude/Anthropic had 515 mentions, OpenAI/GPT 494, and AI Agents 471, across 3,254 postings. These are mention counts only. No broad-set percentage is published.

September Market Dynamics

Volume: Softer Than August, and the Raw Gap Overstates It

Volume Trends:

  • July 2026: 2,549 (first full month on the hybrid basis, clean capture)
  • August 2026: 2,391 stored (two lost capture days only partly backfilled, plus a re-tag of about 127 jobs from automation to platform)
  • September 2026: 1,901 (clean capture, 30 days)

Assessment: September was softer than August, but the raw August→September difference is not a like-for-like change. August's total is partly reconstructed, and September is one day shorter. Measured cleanly, August ran about 88 platform jobs per weekday against July's 97, a high-single-digit softening. September sits below both, and the broad automation set softened alongside it, so part of the gap is real. Two softer months after July is a hint, not a trend, and not a contraction call.

Against the clean baseline: The series' clean baseline is June 2025. Raw counts cannot be measured against it because they cross the May-2026 coverage change and the 2026-06-24 hybrid cutover. Since June 2025, the comparable signals are the median rate and the share rows, not volume.

Aug 2026$32.50$36.91783.26%
Sep 2026$30.00$37.94683.58%

Analysis: The median slipped to $30 from $32.50, a second straight monthly decline ($35 in July → $32.50 → $30). $30 matches December 2025, the only other $30 month in the window. Across the 12 months, the median printed $35 in 8 months, $30 in 2, $38 in 1 and $32.50 in 1. Two moves are not a trend, and this report does not call a floor or a re-base.

The mean edged up to $37.94 from $36.91, inside a $36.91 (Aug 2026) to $43.27 (Feb 2026) band for the window. A one-month mean move is not a shift. The middle half of hourly postings runs $20–$50 (25th to 75th percentile), across 750 postings with an hourly rate.

Premium: 68 postings at $75+/hr, down from 78, while the premium share edged up to 3.58% from 3.26%. That is the smaller denominator, not more premium work. Premium share has ranged 3.26–4.60% across the ten months with data. Premium counts are not comparable across the measurement changes.

Contract Type: Fixed-Price Share Down Four Months Running

MonthFixed-Price Share
May 202642.9%
Jun 202640.1%
Jul 202638.6%
Aug 202637.1%
Sep 202635.2%

Fixed-price share slipped to 35.2% from 37.1%, a fourth straight monthly decline. September had 669 fixed-price and 750 hourly postings. Five months and four moves is a hint with some length, not yet a six-month trend. Keep both quoting modes ready: a defined-deliverable package and an hourly rate.

Strategic Recommendations

Platform Strategy for Q4 2026

1. Zapier: Volume Leader

  • 891 jobs; share of platform mentions flat at 43.55%
  • Broadest client base of the three

Recommendation: Primary platform for volume.

2. n8n: Technical-Depth Option

  • 870 jobs; share of platform mentions up four straight months to 42.52%
  • Technical and self-hosted work is its standing niche

Recommendation: Pair it with Zapier. A four-month mix rise is worth knowing, but it is not a reason to drop Zapier.

3. Make.com: Weakest of the Three

  • 285 jobs; share of platform mentions down four straight months to 13.93%, the lowest in the window

Recommendation: Secondary skill only. A Make-only consultant should add a second platform.

4. CRM: Pick One and Go Deep

  • GoHighLevel: 401 mentions, largest application, share slipped to 21.09%
  • HubSpot: 235 mentions, share edged up to 12.36%
  • Salesforce (70) and Zoho (58) sit on small bases where monthly swings are noise

Recommendation: GoHighLevel for agency work, HubSpot for B2B and RevOps clients. Ignore the monthly CRM rotation.

Ignore the platform horse-race. Zapier is the volume leader, n8n the technical-depth option, Make.com the weakest. Choose based on the clients you want, not last month's arrow.

Application Strategy

High-Value Specializations (rates from September's actual postings):

  1. CRM + Automation / RevOps (examples at $125–200/hr)

    • $200/hr Fractional RevOps and AI Automation Engineer (HubSpot, QuickBooks, e-signature)
    • $150/hr HubSpot Consultant for Platform Integration (HubSpot, Zoom, Mighty Network)
    • $125/hr Chargebee to HubSpot Zapier Integration Specialist
  2. AI Implementation for Small Businesses (examples at $130–200/hr)

    • $200/hr Fractional Forward Deployed Engineer: AI Agents & Automation
    • $150/hr AI & Automation Consultant for a 4-person estate planning law firm (Google Workspace + Clio)
    • $150/hr Google Workspace, Gemini & AI Automation Expert for a pool service business
    • $130/hr AI Senior Consultant
    • The AI share of platform postings is 41.24%. AI fluency is the baseline expectation. The premium is in building production workflows.
  3. Accounting Automation (examples at $125–150/hr)

    • $125/hr AI Automation Specialist: QuickBooks Bookkeeping Agent
    • QuickBooks share edged up to 2.84% (54 mentions); Xero share flat at 1.16% (22 mentions)
  4. E-commerce Operations (example at $150/hr)

    • $150/hr post-order workflow across Shopify, Etsy, Square, ShipStation, Google Sheets and Gmail

Reading the examples honestly: Two of the $150/hr postings are paid research calls (HubSpot + QuickBooks Online, Salesforce + ActiveCampaign), not build engagements. Four of the top 20 are near-identical B2B outreach manager postings at $130/hr. The premium tier is thin. Do not read 20 examples as a broad market.

Avoid/Deprioritize:

  • Airtable-only: share down four straight months to 8.05% (153 mentions)
  • Notion-only: share slipped to 4.94% (94 mentions)
  • Make.com-only: share of platform mentions down four straight months to 13.93%
  • Platform-only generalist: the median is $30. Without a CRM or AI build specialty, that is your gravity.

Rate Strategy for Q4 2026

Current Market:

  • Median: $30/hr (slipped from $32.50, second straight decline)
  • Average: $37.94/hr (edged up from $36.91, inside the $36.91–$43.27 band)
  • Middle half of hourly postings: $20–$50
  • High-paying jobs ($75+): 68 (share 3.58%, edged up from 3.26% while the count fell from 78)
  • Ultra-premium ($150+): 13 jobs
  • Max rate: $200/hr

Positioning:

  • Under $20: The bottom quarter of hourly postings. Avoid.
  • $20–30: From the 25th percentile to the median. This is where generalist work clears.
  • $30–50: From the median to the 75th percentile, the upper part of the $20–$50 middle half. Specialization gets you to the top of it.
  • $50–75: Above the 75th percentile. Requires a CRM or AI build specialty plus proof.
  • $75+: 68 postings this month. Win it with case studies, not positioning language.
  • $150+: 13 postings, topping out at $200/hr. These are fractional and senior AI/RevOps roles.

Key: Lead with the median, not the mean. The median moved down two straight months and the mean moved up one, which is two different stories from the same rate data. Neither is a shift yet.

Q4 2026 Outlook

What to Watch, October–December

These are watch items, not forecasts.

  1. Median rate: After two straight declines to $30, watch whether it stays below $35. A third month would make it a hint worth naming.
  2. Volume: October will be the third cleanly captured month after July. Compare on clean capture only, never against August's reconstructed total.
  3. Make.com share: Watch whether the four-month slide to 13.93% of platform mentions continues.
  4. n8n mention mix: Watch whether the four-month rise to 42.52% continues. It is a mix question, not a leadership race.
  5. Fixed-price share: Watch whether the four straight declines to 35.2% continue.
  6. AI share of platform postings: 41.24% this month vs 40.82% in August. Watch the share, not the overlapping per-term counts.
  7. GoHighLevel share: Watch whether 21.09% is a one-month dip within its 21.09–27.51% range since May 2026.

Market Structure Evolution

What's Happened (12 months):

  • The typical job pays $30–35/hr, the median's range in 11 of the last 12 months (May 2026 printed $38).
  • The average rate moved inside a $36.91–$43.27 band. February 2026's $43.27 was the high, and no step-change occurred.
  • Make.com's share of platform mentions fell from 25.89% in May 2026 to 13.93%, four straight declines.
  • Fixed-price share fell from 42.9% in May 2026 to 35.2%, four straight declines.
  • The AI share of platform postings was 41.24% in September, against 40.82% in August.
  • Premium share ranged 3.26–4.60%. Premium counts are not comparable across the measurement changes.
  • GoHighLevel has been the largest application for 10 straight months.

What the Data Supports:

  • CRM specialization, GoHighLevel or HubSpot, remains the best-supported positioning.
  • AI build work is where September's $130–200/hr examples cluster.
  • Zapier plus n8n covers the bulk of platform mentions. Make.com is a secondary skill.
  • Hourly and fixed-price quoting both matter. Fixed-price share has been falling, not rising.
  • Volume comparisons need clean months on the same basis. Rates and shares are the reliable signals.

Methodology

Data Source: Upwork job postings scraped via Apify (October 2025-September 2026 window shown). The platform set comprises jobs mentioning Zapier, n8n or Make.com, and supplies all headline figures. The broad automation set is used only for the AI tier. Analysis Method: Keyword search in job titles and descriptions (substring matching), unique job counts, with 10 duplicates removed in September. Platform Keywords: "Zapier", "Make.com"/"Integromat", "n8n", "Power Automate" Application Keywords: Specific product names in job descriptions AI Keywords: Claude/Anthropic, OpenAI/GPT, AI Agents, RAG, Vector DBs, LangChain/LangGraph, Voice AI, AI Builders, MCP, Embeddings Rate Calculation: Median and average of posted hourly maximums where provided (750 hourly postings in September)

Measurement Changes:

  • May 2026: The scrape coverage changed. Absolute counts are not comparable to pre-May-2026 months.
  • 2026-06-24: A dedicated platform query was added (hybrid cutover). June 2026 is under-captured, and July 2026 is the first full month on this basis.
  • August 2026: Two capture days were lost and partly backfilled on 2026-08-31. The backfill also re-tagged about 127 jobs into the platform set. August's stored total is not raw-comparable to July or September.
  • June 2025 is the clean baseline. May 2025 is incomplete and is not used as a denominator.

Limitations:

  • Jobs may mention multiple platforms, applications or AI terms (overlap exists). Mention counts are never summed into job totals.
  • Per-term AI figures are overlapping counts. The only AI percentage is the share of platform postings naming any AI term.
  • Rates are posted maximums, not actual contracted rates.
  • The sample represents the Upwork marketplace only.
  • Substring matching may catch incidental mentions (e.g., "excel" in "excellent").

High-Paying Automation Opportunities Guide

September 2026 Market Analysis

Report Date: October 2026 Data Period: June 2025 baseline – September 2026 (12-month window shown: October 2025 – September 2026) High-Paying Jobs Tracked: 68 jobs at $75+/hr in September

Executive Summary

September 2026 kept the premium tier where it has sat all year: a thin slice of a market whose typical job pays in the low-to-mid $30s. High-paying opportunities came to 68 jobs at $75+/hr, or 3.58% of postings. The share edged up from August's 3.26%, but the count fell from 78. That is a smaller denominator, not more premium work. Across this 12-month window the premium share has held in a 3.26%–4.60% band, and September sits inside it.

The median hourly rate slipped to $30 from $32.50 (-7.7% MoM), its second straight monthly decline, and matches December 2025's $30. This is the only stretch in the window where the median printed below $35 in back-to-back months. It is worth watching, but two prints are not a trend. The median printed $35 in 8 of the last 12 months, and December's $30 went back to $35 the following month. The average rate edged up to $37.94 from $36.91 (+2.8% MoM). That is below the $39.46–$43.27 range it held from January through July 2026, and back inside the $37.58–$38.79 range of October–December 2025.

Volume was softer than August. The raw totals (1,901 platform-set postings against 2,391) overstate the gap. August's stored total is partly reconstructed after two lost capture days and a backfill that re-tagged about 6% of its jobs, and September has 30 days to August's 31. September itself captured cleanly. AI terms appeared in 41.24% of platform-set postings (784 jobs), up from 40.82%. Fixed-price share slipped to 35.2% from 37.1%, its fourth straight monthly decline in the SOTU-era series.

Bottom Line: Premium work is real and small. There were 68 postings at $75+, and the tier is no bigger than it has been all year. The typical job paid $30/hr this month, and the median has printed between $30 and $38 across the whole window. Two soft median prints are a hint to watch. They are not a new regime. The $150+ work that did post went mostly to people who can take a small business's half-built AI and workspace setup and make it run.

Rate Tiers & Market Reality

September 2026 Rate Breakdown

TierRate RangeJobs AvailableRequirementsMarket Trend
Ultra-Premium$150-500/hr13 jobsApplied AI + CRM/workspace systems + ability to own a backlogTop rate this month $200; 5 of 13 are not automation builds
Premium$100-150/hr25 jobsCRM/billing integration, accounting automation, AI consultingFour $130 B2B outreach postings, three sharing one description

Mid-Tier$40-50/hr92 jobsSingle platform proficiencyAbove the $30 median
Entry$25-40/hr231 jobsBasic automation tasksLargest bucket; the $30 median sits here

Key Insight: The three premium tiers sum to the 68 high-paying jobs: 13 ultra-premium, 25 premium, and 30 expert. The tier is small enough that a single client's reposts visibly move a bucket. Three of the four $130 B2B outreach postings carry the same description text. The bucket table covers postings at $25/hr and up. With p25 at $20, a quarter of the 750 hourly postings sit at or below $20 and fall below the Entry tier. Half of hourly postings pay $30/hr or less.

Sep 2026$30$37.94/hr683.58%Clean capture; median matches December 2025

The high-paying count column is not comparable across the May 2026 measurement change, the June 24 cutover, or the August backfill. Median and premium share are the comparable columns.

Analysis: The median is the series to read, and it says the typical job pays $30–35. It printed $35 in 8 of 12 months, $30 twice (December 2025 and September 2026), $38 once, and $32.50 once. The mean moves more and means less. February's $43.27 was a one-month outlier that reverted immediately. The current mean of $37.94 against a $30 median is a wider gap than any month in this window except February 2026 ($43.27 against $35). The typical job got cheaper this month while a handful of higher postings held the average up. One more month will show whether the median returns to $35, as it did after December, or prints a third month below it. Even three months would be a hint, not a trend.

Ultra-Premium Opportunities ($150-500/hr)

Profile Requirements

Technical Stack:

  • Applied AI in business operations (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini), not model engineering
  • Workspace suites (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365)
  • CRM + accounting integration (HubSpot, QuickBooks, e-signature)
  • Practice and order systems (Clio, MyCase, Shopify, Etsy, Square, ShipStation)
  • Zapier and app-builder tools (Base44 named in one posting)

Industry Knowledge (from this month's postings — anecdotal, not a tracked trend):

  • Legal (a 4-person estate planning firm, a solo real estate and litigation practice)
  • Field services (pool service business)
  • Small manufacturing and e-commerce (custom furniture maker)
  • B2B consultancies (RevOps after a CRM migration)

Proven Track Record:

  • Finishing someone else's half-built system
  • Owning a backlog over months (one posting specifies 3 to 6 months, part-time)
  • Teaching the client to run it (one $200 posting asks you to "build and teach")
  • Explaining work in plain English to a non-technical owner

September Market Reality

Thirteen jobs posted at $150/hr or more. The top rate was $200, with five postings at that level. Five of the 13 are not automation builds:

  • A business-development partner role
  • A fractional executive networking post
  • A newsletter writer/operator role
  • Two paid research calls of 45–60 minutes each

The remaining eight are real build or ownership work. That is a small, concrete target. Six of the 13 name AI in the title, and the AI they describe is AI applied to a small business's daily operations, such as intake, practice management, and bookkeeping backlogs.

The AI picture, by population. Within platform automation work, AI terms appeared in 41.24% of September postings (784 jobs), up from 40.82% (976 jobs). The share edged up while the count fell, so the smaller month accounts for most of that move. The per-term counts for the platform set were:

  • OpenAI/GPT: 432
  • Claude/Anthropic: 397
  • AI Agents: 337
  • Voice AI: 121
  • RAG: 104
  • MCP: 72
  • Vector DBs: 56
  • LangChain: 49
  • AI Builders: 35
  • Embeddings: 31

These overlap, since one job naming OpenAI and agents is counted under both. They are mention counts, not shares of the market. Relative to the size of the month, Claude/Anthropic slipped for a fourth straight month and Voice AI for a third, while OpenAI/GPT and AI Agents edged up. These are one-month moves on overlapping counts.

The broad automation set is a wider net of 3,254 postings used only for the AI picture, not a measure of market size. Its overlapping mention counts were:

  • Claude/Anthropic: 515
  • OpenAI/GPT: 494
  • AI Agents: 471
  • Voice AI: 158
  • RAG: 116
  • MCP: 92

None of the 20 highest-rate postings this month names a voice platform.

Entry Barrier: High, but it is not a credential stack. The bar is proof that you can take an owner's partly built system and make it run their day.

Actual September Examples

Example 1: Fractional RevOps and AI Automation Engineer

  • Rate: $200/hr
  • Requirements: Own the HubSpot, QuickBooks, e-signature and AI backlog; 3 to 6 months, part-time
  • Project: A small B2B consultancy that moved its CRM from Pipedrive to HubSpot over the summer and rebuilt its internal automations around it
  • Context: Fractional ownership of an ongoing backlog, not a one-off build. CRM and accounting sit in one role.

Example 2: Fractional Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) — AI Agents & Automation

  • Rate: $200/hr
  • Requirements: Experienced senior technical professional with AI agents and automation depth
  • Project: AI BOS is building a selective network of fractional FDEs to support AI implementation projects; the posting states this is not a traditional software developer role
  • Context: A bench/network posting rather than a single scoped project. Treat the rate as a rate card, not guaranteed hours.

Example 3: Finish a solo law firm's AI practice manager to v1 (Base44 · Zapier · Claude · MyCase · M365)

  • Rate: $150/hr
  • Requirements: Base44, Zapier, Claude, MyCase, Microsoft 365
  • Project: A solo attorney in Georgia (land use, real estate closings, title, litigation) has put hundreds of hours into building with Claude. In the posting's words: "The plumbing works; the part that runs the day does not yet."
  • Context: Finishing work on an owner-built AI system, not a greenfield build

Example 4: AI & Automation Consultant for Small Estate Planning Law Firm (Google Workspace + Clio)

  • Rate: $150/hr
  • Requirements: Google Workspace, Clio, practical working knowledge of Claude and ChatGPT
  • Project: A 4-person estate planning and probate firm in Florida that has used Claude and ChatGPT informally for about a year, but everything is still copy/paste by hand
  • Context: The second law firm in the $150+ tier this month. Two postings are an anecdote, not a vertical trend.

Example 5: Automation Developer for Post-order workflow: Shopify, Etsy, Square, ShipStation, Google Sheet, Gmail

  • Rate: $150/hr
  • Requirements: Shopify, Etsy, Square, ShipStation, Google Sheets, Gmail
  • Project: A small, growing custom furniture manufacturer streamlining its post-order workflow, with Google Sheets serving as the internal production board
  • Context: A multi-system order workflow at $150/hr with no AI in the title

Premium Opportunities ($100-150/hr)

Profile Requirements

Core Competencies:

  • Deep expertise in one platform plus working knowledge of a second
  • One CRM taken deep (HubSpot shows up most often in this month's examples)
  • Accounting system fluency (QuickBooks Online)
  • Applied AI delivery for business clients
  • Clear scoping and plain-English communication

Differentiators:

  • Case studies with before/after workflow descriptions
  • Platform and CRM certifications
  • Visible portfolio of integrations you own end to end
  • Repeat clients and references

September High-Demand Segments

1. CRM + Billing Integration ($125-150/hr)

Opportunity: HubSpot named in 235 platform-set postings; HubSpot appears in four of the 20 highest-rate postings

Skills Needed:

  • HubSpot segmentation, workflows, and notifications
  • Billing-to-CRM sync (Chargebee to HubSpot via Zapier at $125/hr)
  • Multi-platform integration (HubSpot + Zoom + Mighty Network at $150/hr)
  • Salesforce + ActiveCampaign sync and reconciliation

Why Premium: Integration work that keeps two systems in agreement pays above the median. HubSpot's share of postings edged up to 12.36% from 10.00% while its count slipped to 235 from 239. The smaller month produced that share move, not new demand.

September Caution: The Salesforce + ActiveCampaign posting is a paid 45–60 minute research call, not an engagement. A $150/hr call is not $150/hr of sustained work.

2. Accounting Automation ($125-150/hr)

Opportunity: QuickBooks named in 54 postings; Xero in 22

Skills Needed:

  • QuickBooks Online integration
  • Transaction categorization and receipt/invoice matching
  • AI-assisted bookkeeping workflows
  • CRM-to-accounting reconciliation

Why Premium: An AI-assisted QuickBooks bookkeeping agent for a multi-entity construction client posted at $125/hr. A HubSpot + QuickBooks Online research call posted at $150/hr, and the $200 RevOps role bundles QuickBooks into its backlog. QuickBooks' share edged up to 2.84% from 1.92%. These are small counts, so read them as a level, not a move.

3. AI Consulting & Delivery ($125-130/hr)

Opportunity: AI terms in 41.24% of platform-set postings (784 jobs)

Skills Needed:

  • AI agent and LLM-based application delivery
  • System integrations around the model, not just the prompt
  • Identifying practical, high-value AI use cases with clients
  • Production reliability for small-business deployments

Why Premium: A Senior AI Consultant role focused on AI agents, automation, LLM applications, and integrations posted at $130/hr. The pattern across this tier is AI applied to an existing business process, not AI as a standalone research project.

4. B2B Outbound Operations ($130/hr)

Opportunity: Four B2B outreach manager postings at $130/hr

Skills Needed:

  • Cold email and LinkedIn outreach execution
  • Campaign automation flows
  • Paid lead generation (Meta campaigns named in one posting)
  • Hands-on operations, not pure strategy

Why Premium: Outbound execution with automation attached pays above the median. The caution is that three of the four postings share identical description text and are likely one client. This segment is thinner than four line items suggest.

Expert Tier Opportunities ($75-100/hr)

Profile Requirements

Core Skills:

  • Deep expertise in one platform OR
  • Competency in two platforms
  • One CRM at working depth
  • Project management capabilities

Minimum Credentials:

  • Client references
  • Public portfolio with documented builds
  • Platform or CRM certification

The 30 expert-tier postings are not itemized in this month's examples, which list $125+ jobs. The segments below are where volume sits; they are not rate claims.

Resilient Segments

1. GoHighLevel Agency Automation

Opportunity: 401 postings, the largest tracked application

Focus:

  • GoHighLevel workflows, CRM, funnels, snapshots
  • Zapier or n8n for external integrations
  • Agency workflow setup and maintenance

Why It Holds: GoHighLevel is the most durable specialization in the full year of data. Its share of postings slipped to 21.09% from 25.09%, and across the SOTU-era months it has drifted lower from 27.51% in May 2026, with August the one up-month. That is a drift to watch, not a reversal. None of the 20 highest-rate postings names GoHighLevel, so its case this month rests on volume, not premium rates.

2. Zapier Advanced Implementation

Opportunity: 891 postings; Zapier remains the volume leader

Focus:

  • Multi-step workflows with error handling
  • CRM and billing syncs
  • Finishing and hardening existing builds

Why Relevant: Zapier appears in two of the 20 highest-rate postings: the Chargebee-to-HubSpot sync at $125 and the solo law firm build at $150. Breadth of client base is Zapier's standing advantage.

3. n8n Technical Builds

Opportunity: 870 postings; n8n remains the technical-depth option

Focus:

  • Self-hosted workflows
  • AI agent orchestration
  • Complex multi-system logic

Why Relevant: n8n's share of platform mentions rose to 42.52% from 39.17%. None of the 20 highest-rate postings names n8n in the title this month. That is a one-month absence, not a signal.

4. Ops Glue: Sheets + Slack Workflows

Opportunity: Google Sheets in 214 postings; Slack in 177

Focus:

  • Sheets as a production board or lightweight database
  • Slack notifications and approvals
  • Order and intake workflows

Why Relevant: The $150 furniture-workflow posting runs its production board in Google Sheets. Google Sheets' share edged up to 11.26% from 10.08%, and Slack's to 9.31% from 8.07%, while both counts fell. Both are one-month moves on a smaller month.

Navigating the Current Market

September Market Reality

Market Status:

  • Total jobs: 1,901 platform-set postings. Capture was clean, but volume was softer than August, and the raw totals overstate the gap.
  • Median rate: $30/hr (-7.7% MoM, second straight decline, matches December 2025)
  • Average rate: $37.94/hr (+2.8% MoM)
  • p25 / p75: $20 / $50
  • High-paying jobs: 68 at $75+ (3.58% of postings, up from 3.26%; count down from 78)
  • Ultra-premium ($150+): 13 jobs; premium ($100-150): 25; expert ($75-100): 30
  • Max rate: $200/hr
  • Fixed-price share: 35.2% (down from 37.1%, fourth straight decline)
  • AI any-term share: 41.24% (up from 40.82%)

What This Means:

  • The premium tier is a small, steady slice of the market, inside the band it has held all window
  • The typical job is in the low $30s, and half of hourly postings pay $30 or less
  • Five of the 13 $150+ postings are not build work, so the real top-tier target is smaller than the headline count
  • The volume comparison with August is not like-for-like; October against September will be the first clean month-over-month read since the June cutover

The Median Is the Signal

12-Month Median:

  • $35 in 8 months
  • $30 in 2 months (December 2025, September 2026)
  • $38 in 1 month (May 2026)
  • $32.50 in 1 month (August 2026)

Implication: The median is capture-independent, so it is the cleanest read across all three measurement breaks. It has been below $35 for two months. That is the honest headline, and it does not need dramatizing. If you price off "the market rate," price off $30–35, not off the mean.

Action Plan

If Revenue Growing: Own the Backlog

Immediate:

  1. Convert active clients into fractional ownership of their CRM and AI backlog. The $200 RevOps posting is the template.
  2. Write up one "finished the owner's system" case study
  3. Pursue the eight $150+ build postings' profile (small operators with half-built AI setups) selectively
  4. Hold rates; a softer median is no reason to discount specialist work

Q4 Strategy:

  1. Package your top two recurring builds as fixed-scope offers
  2. Deepen one CRM and one accounting integration
  3. Add plain-English documentation and handoff training to every delivery

If Revenue Stable: Specialize Deeper

Actions:

  1. Pick one CRM (GoHighLevel or HubSpot) and one accounting system (QuickBooks) and go deep
  2. Add applied-AI delivery to existing workflows rather than pitching AI as a separate service
  3. Target the 121 experienced-tier ($50-75) and 30 expert-tier ($75-100) postings with specialized proposals
  4. Skip research-call postings unless you want the conversation; they are not engagements

Goal: Stay above the $30 median by being specific, not by being cheaper.

If Revenue Down: Aim Above the Crowd

Immediate:

  1. Half of hourly postings pay $30 or less. Competing there on price is the crowded lane.
  2. Target the 121 postings at $50-75/hr with a CRM- or industry-specific pitch
  3. Build one demo that takes a messy owner-built workflow and makes it reliable
  4. Add QuickBooks or HubSpot integration to your stack if it isn't there

30-Day Plan:

  1. Complete one CRM certification
  2. Build two portfolio projects: one CRM-to-billing sync and one AI-assisted intake or bookkeeping flow
  3. Rewrite your profile around outcomes for a specific type of small business

Rate Optimization Strategies

1. Finish and Run the Owner's System

Strategy: Small operators are building with Claude and ChatGPT themselves and getting stuck. They pay to have it finished.

Before: "I build Zapier/n8n automations" After: "I take the AI setup you started and make it run your day"

Tactics:

  • Lead discovery calls with "what have you already built?"
  • Show before/after for a copy/paste process you eliminated
  • Name the client's actual tools (Clio, MyCase, Google Workspace, M365) in your proposal
  • Include handoff documentation as a deliverable

Rate Impact: Both law-firm postings in this pattern listed $150/hr, against a $30 median.

2. Fractional Ownership

Strategy: Three of the five $200 postings carry "Fractional" in the title.

Before: "Freelance automation developer" After: "Fractional automation and RevOps owner for your CRM, billing and AI backlog"

Tactics:

  • Offer a defined part-time engagement (the RevOps posting specifies 3 to 6 months)
  • Own a backlog list the client can see and prioritize
  • Report monthly on what was shipped and what broke
  • Note that one of the three fractional postings is an executive networking post, not a build. Read every posting before you count it.

Rate Impact: The fractional RevOps and FDE roles posted at $200/hr.

3. CRM + Accounting Stacking

Strategy: Integration work that keeps the CRM and the books in agreement showed up repeatedly at $125–200/hr.

Before: "HubSpot specialist" After: "I connect HubSpot, billing and QuickBooks so your pipeline and your books match"

Tactics:

  • HubSpot (235 postings) or GoHighLevel (401 postings) as the CRM base
  • QuickBooks Online (54 postings) as the accounting pair
  • Billing tools (Chargebee) and e-signature as connectors
  • Reconciliation and drift detection as a named deliverable

Rate Impact: This month's examples in this pattern ran $125 (Chargebee to HubSpot, QuickBooks bookkeeping agent), $150 (HubSpot + QuickBooks Online call) and $200 (RevOps).

4. Package Pricing

Strategy: Fixed-price work is still 35.2% of postings, so scoping a defined deliverable remains a real option.

Tactics:

  • Package your most repeated build (order workflow, CRM-to-billing sync, AI intake) at a fixed scope
  • Price against the outcome, not against the $30 median hour
  • Note that fixed-price share has fallen four straight months in the SOTU-era series. That series is not on the same basis as the year-long rise measured on Aaron's data. Treat it as a hint, not a reversal, and offer both hourly and fixed options.

Rate Impact: It decouples your price from the hourly median. One $200/hr posting itself states a fixed price of 1,000 US$ in its description, so clients mix the two.

Platform Strategy for Q4 2026

September Landscape: Mix Moving Between n8n and Make, Zapier Flat

September Facts:

  • Zapier: 891 postings; 43.55% of platform mentions (flat against 43.66%)
  • n8n: 870 postings; 42.52% of platform mentions (up from 39.17%, a fourth straight monthly increase)
  • Make.com: 285 postings; 13.93% of platform mentions (down from 17.18%, a fourth straight monthly decline and the lowest Make.com mix in this 12-month window)
  • Power Automate: 28 postings (share flat)
  • Every platform's count was lower than August's. The August total is partly reconstructed, and mention counts overlap, so do not sum them.

Strategic Implications:

Zapier Positioning:

  • Volume leader, with its mix flat for the month
  • Broadest mid-market client base
  • Named in two of the 20 highest-rate postings
  • Strategy: Primary platform for breadth

n8n Positioning:

  • Technical-depth option
  • Mix up four months running, from 32.67% in May 2026. It ran 39–41% in October–November 2025, so the current level is not far outside where it sat a year ago.
  • Four moves is more than a hint and less than a six-month trend
  • Strategy: Pair with AI orchestration and one CRM

Make.com Positioning:

  • Weakest of the three, as it has been all year
  • Mix and share of postings both down four months running
  • Strategy: Secondary skill only, not a primary specialization

Multi-Platform Approach:

  • There is no platform race to bet on. Zapier is the volume leader, n8n the technical-depth option, and Make the weakest.
  • Pick the platform that matches the clients you want
  • Integration and finishing work travels across all three

Application Strategy

Safe Bets (Most Durable Across the Window)

1. GoHighLevel

  • 401 postings, the largest tracked application
  • Share slipped to 21.09% from 25.09%; the SOTU-era share has drifted lower from 27.51% in May 2026
  • Still the best-supported specialization across the full year
  • Positioning: Agency CRM + automation specialist; watch the share drift

2. HubSpot

  • 235 postings, with share up to 12.36% from 10.00%
  • SOTU-era share has held in a 10.00%–13.54% range
  • Appears in four of the 20 highest-rate postings
  • Positioning: CRM + billing/accounting integration

3. QuickBooks + Xero

  • QuickBooks: 54 postings, share up to 2.84% from 1.92%
  • Xero: 22 postings, share flat at 1.16%
  • QuickBooks named in three of the 20 highest-rate postings
  • Positioning: Accounting automation and AI-assisted bookkeeping

Watch List

Salesforce

  • 70 postings, share up to 3.68% from 2.84%
  • SOTU-era share range 2.84%–4.08%
  • Watch: Small counts; read the range, not the month

Zoho

  • 58 postings, share flat at 3.05%
  • Watch: Steady at a low level

Monday.com

  • 54 postings, share up to 2.84% from 2.17%
  • Watch: One-month move

Airtable

  • 153 postings, share down to 8.05% from 8.70%, a fourth straight monthly decline (from 17.80% in May 2026)
  • Watch: The most consistent decline among tracked applications in the SOTU era. Four moves is a hint, not yet six.

Avoid/Deprioritize (as Standalone Specialties)

Low share, none in the top 20 examples:

  • Notion: 94 postings, share down to 4.94% from 5.31% (from 9.08% in May 2026)
  • Excel: 72 postings, share up to 3.79% from 2.80%. Small and steady once the old "excellent" overcount is removed: 68 in July (2.67%), 67 in August, 72 in September.
  • ClickUp: 69 postings, share flat at 3.63%
  • Asana: 39 postings, share up to 2.05% from 1.55%
  • Trello: 17 postings, share up to 0.89% from 0.59%

Strategy: These are tools you integrate, not specialties you sell. Keep them in your stack, and lead with CRM + platform + applied AI.

Q4 2026 Outlook

What to Watch, October–December 2026

This section does not forecast. It lists what the next three months will settle.

Median rate:

  • Whether it returns to $35, as it did after December 2025, or prints a third month below $35
  • Even a third month would be a hint, not a trend

Premium share:

  • Whether it stays inside the 3.26%–4.60% band it has held across the window
  • Always read alongside the count, which fell this month

Volume:

  • October against September is the first clean month-over-month volume comparison since the June 24 cutover
  • Judge it per day and per weekday, not on raw totals

Platform mix:

  • n8n's four straight increases in mention mix and Make.com's four straight declines
  • Six months of the same direction would make it a trend

Fixed-price share:

  • Four straight declines in the SOTU-era series
  • Whether it continues or settles

Q4 Bottom Line:

  • The standing condition is a $30–35 median market with a small premium tier and AI in roughly four of every ten platform jobs
  • We are not calling a turn in any of these
  • Position for the condition, not for a prediction

Final Recommendations

The Premium Positioning Formula (Q4 2026)

1. CRM Foundation (Choose One):

  • GoHighLevel: 401 postings, the largest application, with share drifting lower
  • HubSpot: 235 postings, in four of the top 20 examples
  • Salesforce: 70 postings, share range 2.84%–4.08% in the SOTU era
  • QuickBooks/Xero: 54 and 22 postings, the accounting pair for any CRM

2. Platform Proficiency:

  • Option A: Zapier (volume leader, 891 postings)
  • Option B: n8n (technical depth, 870 postings)
  • Option C: Both (widest client reach)

3. AI Capabilities:

  • Applied AI inside existing workflows (intake, bookkeeping, practice management)
  • Claude, OpenAI and Gemini at the integration level
  • AI terms appear in 41.24% of platform-set postings. Fluency is expected; the premium is in building.

4. Proof and Positioning:

  • Case studies showing an owner's process before and after
  • Industry-specific framing
  • Fractional and fixed-scope offers alongside hourly

Formula Result: A credible shot at the 68 postings a month paying $75+/hr, which is 3.58% of the market. It is a real target and a small one, and proof wins it.

The Bottom Line

September 2026 was a calm month with one thing worth watching.

The numbers:

  • Median $30/hr, a second straight decline, matching December 2025
  • Average $37.94/hr, back inside its October–December 2025 range
  • 68 premium jobs at $75+ (3.58% of postings, inside the window's band)
  • 13 jobs at $150+, five of them not build work
  • AI terms in 41.24% of platform-set postings
  • Fixed-price share 35.2%, a fourth straight decline in the SOTU-era series

Thriving Segments:

  • Finishing owner-built AI systems for small businesses ($150/hr examples)
  • Fractional CRM, billing and AI backlog ownership ($200/hr examples)
  • CRM + accounting integration ($125–200/hr examples)
  • GoHighLevel and HubSpot as the two largest CRM bases

Struggling Segments:

  • Generalists pricing at or below the $30 median, where half of hourly postings sit
  • Make.com-only positioning
  • Standalone Notion, Excel, Trello or ClickUp specialties
  • Chasing research calls and network postings as if they were engagements

The market didn't change shape this month. The typical job pays in the low $30s, the premium tier is thin, and AI shows up in roughly four of every ten platform jobs. The two soft median prints deserve a look in October, not a new strategy.

Typical pay in the low $30s. Premium work at 68 jobs, 3.58% of postings. AI in 41.24% of platform jobs. Two soft median prints are a hint, not a trend. Watch October.
